The map shows the heart of the Dolomites, where most of the best known mountain groups and passes are located. The Sella Ring (Pordoi, Sella, Gardena, and Campolongo Passes), and the Falzarego, Giau, Fedaia, Staulanza and Duran passes are easily reached from the Agordino area. The Rolle, Valles, San Pellegrino, Cibiana, Tre Croci, and Cereda Passes are not far beyond this radius (the latter is just off the bottom of the map; it connects Fiera di Primiero, south of San Martino di Castrozza, and Agordo). Note: the Stelvio, Gavia and Mortirolo passes are NOT in the Dolomites.
There are abundant hotels, B&B's, and agriturismi (family-run farm touring establishments) offering lodgings for every taste and at every price level. When following the Giro d'Italia stages in this area, or hiking in the sourrounding mountains, I stay at the Agriturismo Lezuo in Colle Santa Lucia (Via Fossal, 20; tel 0437-521003, 337-375317), where I pay 22 euro per night for a cozy little room with bath and a continental breakfast. (No, I am not required to milk the cows or shovel manure!).
