Other events I've ridden include the GF dei Colli Euganei-10 Colli del Santo and the GF Melinda, which have been discontinued. In 1998 an all-women granfondo, La Conca di Smeraldo, was run in Recoaro Terme. It received coverage in national cycling magazines and my friends and I were excited to see photos of ourselves. It hasn't been held since, and a new women-only event (in the same area) scheduled for April 2004 was cancelled for lack of participants. The intention was to attract women who wanted to get into gran fondo riding, but who might be intimidated by riding in a large event with predominantly male competitors. It seems, though, that most women prefer riding with the guys (could it be because some of them get served, protected, towed and pushed up the climbs by their male buddies?) My team sponsor, Maglificio Jolanda, tells me that they will sponsor a women-only gran fondo in 2010.

This new series (2010) consists of GF's held in Italian cities and areas that are among UNESCO's World Heritage sites. Two are in the Veneto, the GF Damiano Cunego in Verona, and the GF Sportful in Feltre (Dolomites)
