Cycling monument in Conegliano

Near the monument stands a little chapel dedicated to "the protectress of cycling." On either side of the Madonna are photos of the Veneto's beloved cycling champions of yesteryear.

Monument to Fausto Coppi in Ponte di Piave

The plaque on the monument reads, "Fausto Coppi, the sportsmen remember you.

The little shrine above is along the Brenta River Bikeway (but is bypassed by a new section). A local resident added this stone bearing a charming prayer in rhyme (which sounds better in Italian, of course).

"Oh cyclist

of this beautiful path

Stop to pray

[to] the Virgin Mary (Maria)

that she protect you along the way (via);

[to] Anthony, illustrious saint (santo)

to have lots (tanto) of breath;

and [to] Saint Rita,

to surmount every climb (salita)."

Gino Carmelli of Melbourne Australia has graciously shared the above photo of a monument to Silvano Schiavon, a professional cyclist of the 60's and 70's. Gino writes, "His monument is located at the entrance to his native town of Zero Branco, near Treviso. It celebrates the life of a great rider whose life was tragically cut short, after his retirement from competitive cycling, as a result of an industrial accident."
