2005 GIRO GALLERY
A plastic pass clipped to a pink lanyard. Stampa -- Press, it said: the difference between being just a spectator and an insider of la carovana rosa--the "pink carovan" of the Giro d'Italia. When I placed it around my neck, a dream had came true: I was now a journalist, on assignment for Roadie International magazine, with veteran photographer Mitch Friedman, who got us this gig and taught me a lot (alas, the magazine folded before my article could be published, though other articles I had written for them previously did appear in print). Wearing it was a thrill and an honor. and I was intrigued by the ways in which that pass changed the way I approached and viewed the race. One thing for sure: I never wanted to go back to just spectating!
