TESTIMONIANZE

page 5

The "Rosina climb cycling circuit" is a local favorite. It's on the parcours of many races, including numerous stages of the Giro d'Italia in recent years. It's named for an old restaurant at its summit, currently owned by the founder's grandson, Gaetano Lunardon, a cycling enthusiast who is very involved and influential in cycling affairs. Giro memorabilia can be viewed in the lobby, and the cycling chapel, seen at right and below, is

just across the road.

The chapel dedicated to the Madonna del Ciclista is at the top of the Rosina climb. It's the only chapel in Italy conceived and created for this express purpose.

The statue of the Madonna del Ciclista in the Rosina chapel--note the cyclists circling the

base of her throne.

A monument to Alfredo Martini, legendary c.t. of the Italian National Team, is in front of the church. The map shows the 6 cities where riders under his guidance won world championships.

In the center of Vidor is this "Cyclist's Fountain" dedicated to the memory of Ottavio Bottecchia, a great champion who was born in Treviso province. An elderly man riding a battered Ciclo Piave stopped to tell me that Bottecchia actually stopped to drink at the original fountain on this spot, then he would ride down the street to drink wine at the osteria, which is now a pharmacy.

A little shrine "In memory of deceased cyclists." The smaller sign on the left states that a mass in their memory is celebrated one day each May in the church of Castelnuovo di Teolo, in the Euganean Hills.

The monument to Tullio Campagnolo on Passo Croce d'Aune, where in a race on a freezing day, his inability to loosen the wingnuts on his rear wheel due to cold, stiff, fingers, led to his invention of the quick-release.

(He would most certainly be sad to see his creation replaced by thru-axles).

What long-ago fan chipped the name of the campionissimo into the stone railing of a bridge over the moat around the walled city of Cittadella?

This wonderful nativity scene was created by a group of cycling enthusiasts from Caltrano, using bike parts and tires, It was displayed at the Madonna del Ciclista church on the Rosina, where it attracted many delighted and appreciative visitors.
