I've been going to see the Giro since 1991, and as of 2019, have been to 95 stages (2020 was a no-go due to Covid). I'm fortunate to have seen many of cycling's winningest riders in action: Indurain, LeMond, Bugno, Cipollini, Pantani, Petacchi, Bettini, Basso, Simoni, Ullrich, Savodelli, Cunego, Cavendish, Contador, Evans, Pinot, Froome, Wiggins, Nibali...beloved riders like Scarponi, Rebellin, and Bruseghin...ones that history would prefer to forget, like Armstrong, Riccò and Di Luca...and riders like Schleck, Sella, and Zabriskie, who lived great moments before their careers and lives went awry.

You will recognize them and many others in these photos, but you will realize that there are many more riders that you don't recognize at all: the anonymous gregari who toil away day in and day out, with no chance for fame or glory.

When I look back over my albums, I am struck by the thought of what a brutal, cruel, tragic, sport cycling is...and how epic and magnificent.

All photos were taken by me and are my personal property. They may not be reproduced or used with out permission.
